Week 10

For week 10, I brought everything together for the final presentation. I double checked and tested the different inputs and physical setup on Tuesday, just for the monitor connection not to work on Thursday. I was able to troubleshoot this quickly by using an HDMI to usb-c converter to connect to the CRT. One final change I made was creating a physical box to put the midi mixer in. I didn’t want the user to be overwhelmed by all the different options on the mixer. To combat this, I created a cardboard box that covered all of the sliders besides the ones needed for the experience. I then labeled each of them.

I was also able to obtain a much more unique mouse option for player movement. The new mouse looks more like a joystick and has buttons directly on it. This allows the players to look around and move with just the joystick. This adds the arcade feel that I wanted in the final version of the project.

For the last week I looked back at some of my original inspiration like James Turell, Doug Wheeler, and Dan Flavin. I think that my final project has some clear connections to their work in both the upper and lower portion. In the upper part of my project for example, the large spaces, rim lights, and sculpture-like features are reminiscent of Turell and Wheeler. While I took a different direction for the bottom, I still think it is reminiscent of Flavin’s work in how the light is clearly coming from the specific features.

Overall, I am really happy with how this project turned out. Everything came together perfectly, and reflected my original intentions for the project. Adding the midi mixer was the biggest turning point for the project. It allowed you to change the colors with the most freedom, which is what I wanted. It was also the time where I adjusted some of the light settings, so the scene overall looked a lot better. I am also satisfied with the presentation of the project. I love how the CRT look  turned out, and that the inputs were simple yet allowed flexibility and freedom. I am excited to see where this ends up for the EDP Expo!
