Week 9
For week 9, I have started to bring all the parts of the project together. I started to finalize the digital parts of the project, as well as how I am going to present them to the class. I think that coming into this week, the digital portion of the project is mostly completed. The lights and movement work well, I just needed to finish the ending and find a way to prompt the user into getting there. I think that I got most of the way there, but might have to make some modifications before the showcase in the spring. Instead of a messy bottom portion, I decided to make it more dark and gloomy, which also relates to the original concept I had for the project. I think that this perfectly reflections the emotions I am trying to convey. For the story aspect, I created sensors in the space that trigger different actions. They help to drop the user from the top to the bottom level, as well as bring them to the trigger that ends the experience. I think that for the future I will add a timer and colors to the sensors, but for next week this system works well.
Another big achievement I made this week was finding the perfect TV to display my experience. I saw an old CRT TV during some of the past weeks and was curious if it would work with my setup. I thought that this would work well for two reasons. First, I like the look and style of it. I think the retro look will add a lot of character to this experience. The second is the fact that my godot project is clear but not perfectly rendered. I think this is just because of the system, but I am sure there is a way to fix it. I thought that the lower resolution of the monitor could hide some of the pixels that might take you out of the experience while maintaining the color quality.
Now that I am seeing this all come together, I am starting to use complete experiences as inspiration for my final setup. I am thinking of old arcade games specifically now that I have my midi mixer and CRT monitor set up. At an arcade, the controls are very simple and the screen is right in front of you. This is what I wanted to replicate for this experience. I wanted to be able to control everything without a keyboard and keep the style to that of an arcade machine. I think the use of the CRT really enhances this experience.
