Week 6
For the midterm, I wanted to make sure I added lighting to my new scene so I could best show off my vision. I first added some general fill lights to the space, so the large dome could have a distinct color. I also wanted to add a ring light around the rim of the space. I struggled at first when trying to figure out how to do this because godot does not have 3D area lights. I switched to using a taurus shape and giving it an emitting material. I think this works well, although I want to figure out how to get it to glow brighter.
I finished the “sculpture” idea for the top of the dome. I think that this part perfectly reflects the combination of inspiration and new ideas. I like the design, but I still need to figure out exactly how I want to light it. I want each ring to have its own light, but so far it has been hard to get a point light to only shine on one ring. That will be my mission for next week.
Once again I used a lot of James Turrell's work for the top sculpture of the project. I tried to emulate some of his concentric circle designs. I like how this has turned out, next I just need to figure out how I am going to light it. I like the look of Turell’s lighting, but I am unsure how exactly I am going to replicate it in godot.
In addition to Turell, I am using newer light and space artists like Dan Flavin as inspiration for the bottom portion of my piece. His work has more minimal lights that come from a clear source and don’t take up the whole room. It is a little more subtle and intimate. I want to create a darker, more chaotic feel, and I think this technique could work really well.
I also like the colors that Flavin uses. He has multiple colors and sources coming from one object, and he utilizes different surfaces to highlight those colors. I want to try and figure out this mixed color technique in godot for the bottom portion of the experience.
